Tools for Accessible Web Sites

This page features information on those tools that practitioners in State agencies are using to help them create and maintain accessible web sites. It is not intended to be an all-inclusive resource, nor is it intended to imply endorsement of these products by this Committee.

If you have any questions about the tools listed here, or have information on a tool that you would like to see added, please contact Debi Orton at dorton@goer.state.ny.us.

Helpful Browsers/Browser Tools

  • LYNX — Lynx is a text browser, which is useful in checking your page to see an approximation of what your page will look like to a screen reader. Lynx is plain vanilla — no scripting, no style sheets, no plug-ins. This link takes you to a .zip file of the program, which you must download, extract and install.
NOTE: Because it is sometimes difficult to find a Windows-compatible copy of Lynx, we have provided a copy of the .zip file on this site.
  • Mozilla Firefox — Firefox is the latest product in the open source Mozilla line. It's fast, it correctly renders all standard HTML, and you can couple it with a Web Developer 0.9.4 freeware toolbar to enable you to do such things as turn off images, scripting, stylesheets, etc. for checking your page. The toolbar also has links to the W3C validators for HTML and CSS, and to Cynthia Says for WCAG 1.0 and Section 508 validation.

  • Accessible Information Solutions provides a Web Accessibility Toolbar that interfaces nicely with Microsoft's Internet Explorer Browser.
