About

On November 19, 2004 the NYS Forum Executive Committee created the Emerging Technologies Work Group.

The Emerging Technologies Work Group was explored by a group of public and corporate sector members, at the request of NYS Forum public sector members, to bring to the forefront new and emerging technologies that can provide value and cost saving practices to public sector entities.

Consistent with The NYS Forum maintaining its role as an efficient and vital information resource for the NYS Government, the Emerging Technologies Work Group will:

  • Provide an avenue for government and commercial organizations to exchange information related to new technologies.
  • Facilitate the introduction, evaluation and sponsorship of topics relating to new and emerging technologies for consideration by The NYS Forum.

The scope of the work group topics is expected to be dynamic. Members from both the public and corporate sectors as well as other Forum work group cochairs and members are encouraged to join the work group to help shape the agenda going forward. It is clear that "emerging technologies" will have implications for, and in many instances grow from, the work of other Forum work groups focusing on specific issues (i.e. security). In such instances it will be the role of this new work group to work in collaboration with other work groups to ensure that the new technologies research and role is thoughtfully explored and presented in a context appropriate for public sector deliberation and consideration.

Suggested Work Group Priorities

  • Exchange ideas and best practices pertaining to new and emerging technologies.
  • Sponsor vendor/customer presentations and demonstrations.
  • Engage state and local government entities to identify today's IT challenges and provide research on new technology solutions.
  • Build case studies, including related ROI data, using pilot projects and presenting back to the Executive Committee.
  • Provide information to and work in collaboration with the Office of the CIO and the NYS CIO Council to ensure alignment with New York State's technology direction.
  • Provide specific information on conferences and web sessions that relate to new and emerging technologies.
  • Provide and manage a repository of information on new technologies.
  • Encourage various conferences held within the NYS Government to include an emerging technology agenda by providing topical areas, case studies and presentations.

Suggested Topics

Topics for discussion will be drawn from current proven technologies and from leading edge technologies. The following are potential topics for consideration:

  • Wireless and mobile Systems
