The objectives of the Emerging Technologies Committee (ETC) are to provide an avenue for government and commercial organizations to exchange information related to new technologies and facilitate the introduction, evaluation and sponsorship of topics relating to new and emerging technologies for consideration by The NYS Forum members.

2006-2007 Accomplishments

  • Hosted three (3) Emerging Technology seminars:
    • "Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) - The Enterprise Perspective" on 10/31/06
    • "Document Management - The 3 R's - Requirements, Retention and Recall" on 2/27/07
    • "Mobile Digital Forms - Using today's applications in the Field" on 5/22/07
  • Arranged a second visit to the SUNY Albany Nano Technology Center which was held on May 30th, 2007
  • In an effort to develop a strengthened relationship with the Center for Technology in Government, the ETC scheduled and held a meeting on 1/18/07 that resulted in a better understanding of the functions of both organizations and the groundwork for future collaboration was established to further develop metrics on Emerging Technology applications in government (ROI data, etc.)
  • The initiative to develop a "user group" or other process to link "early adopters" of emerging technologies with each other and with potential new users coming on-line was pursued through post-seminar surveys. Although the results of the seminar surveys were positive (ranging from 70-85%) a very small percentage of those that attended completed the on-line surveys and even fewer responded to be part of a user group.

2007-2008 Projected Initiatives

The ETC has discussed and evaluated emerging technologies and possible future seminar topics for consideration. The current plan is for the ETC to do three sessions a year (what we've been able to accomplish the last 2 years), with the topics prioritized at the annual planning session in July. Some of the emerging issues that have been identified so far include:

  • Web-based digital forms - fall 2007 session
  • Spatial Technology - GIS convergence (1)
  • Network-based applications
  • Video conferencing (1)
  • Datamarts / data warehouses (1)
  • Smartcard Technology
  • Knowledge Management (7)
  • Thin provisioning
  • ITIL
  • Unified Communications
  • Emergency Alert Notification
  • CMDB
  • E-Discovery (1)
  • Conduct a session on web-based digital forms to complete the series on the mobile workforce (7)
  • Conduct a session on "forward facing" business intelligence-including the suggested topic below (2)
    • Conduct a session on data sharing/integration within and across agencies (9)
  • Conduct a session on the security of mobile devices (2)
