The MetroNY Initiative
In 2008 the NYS Forum and NYC Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications (DoITT) initiated exploration of the extension of The Forum, its IT Corporate Roundtable, and Work Group program capacity, to work in support of DoITT and NYC agency IT leadership and staff. In short, it was deemed of mutual benefit to extend The Forum's model in support of the largest local government information management systems in the State. The pursuance of this extension to MetroNY was undertaken with great care to address ethics, lobbying, procurement and other considerations relevant to The Forum's unique government/corporate partnership, as had been accomplished several years ago in the Albany context.
An initial joint session of The Forum and DoITT was conducted for technology corporate representatives in June 2008. The success of that initial event led to the conduct of joint Forum/DoITT leadership meeting with The Forum's IT Corporate Roundtable on August 7, 2008, where the commitment to the extension of The Forum to a MetroNY presence, was affirmed. This was further reinforced by The Forum's appointment of Paul Cosgrave, NYC CIO, as a representative to The Forum's Executive Council.
After working with a steering committee of NYC agency CIO's, it was agreed that the launch of the MetroNY initiative would take place in the fall of 2009 and be focused on the emerging topic of "cloud computing". That launch of MetroNY did take place in September 2009.
In March 2010, a meeting of The NYS Forum's Roundtable members was held in New York City to reaffirm the commitment and plans for continuity of the MetroNY Initiative, including creation of a corporate MetroNY Development Team. Sixty-five members representing a majority of The Forum's Corporate Roundtable member organizations attended the session which was addressed by representatives of The NYS Forum's leadership, DoITT, and leadership of the Corporate Roundtable.
On May 4, 2010 a session on the NYC IT agenda and cloud computing was held in NYC and was addressed by Carole Post, Commissioner/CIO, DoITT and Linda Cureton, NASA CIO. Attended by over one hundred and fifty city/state government leadership and staff and over fifty corporate representatives, both Forum and DoITT leadership reiterated the commitment for future events addressed to government priorities.
