About

The Forum's Standing Committee on Project Management was created to support government entities and government project managers as they adopt project management standards and practices, establish Project Management Offices (PMOs), and implement program and portfolio management within their organizations. The PM Committee's priorities are set by the NYS Forum in its annual planning sessions. It is co-chaired by Girk Cakmak from Bowne Mgmt. Systems (External Link), Vivian Conboy from Dept. of Tax & Finance, Chris Foster from CGI Technologies and Solutions Inc. (External Link), and Diana Pinto from Workers' Compensation Board. The PM Committee has created special interest workgroups in this effort.

The NYS PM Community of Practice provides a forum for an interactive exchange of ideas, practices, lessons learned, etc. among project managers in New York government. This knowledge exchange is supported by the Project Management Repository (see below). The group meets on a quarterly basis and is open to all interested in learning more about PM topics. All meetings are posted on the Forum's Calendar of Events.

The PMO Roundtable was established to support Project Management implementation efforts, including Project Management Office establishment, Project Management Methodology implementation across a division/bureau/agency, as well as management of agency project portfolios. The membership of the PMOs Roundtable is limited to NYS agencies that have demonstrated commitment to implementing Project Management by either establishing a formal Project Management Office, or undertaking an initiative under executive sponsorship to implement a project management methodology. This group also meets quarterly, and anyone interested in joining the PMO Roundtable may contact Brenda Breslin at blb12@health.state.ny.us.

The standard PM methodology for New York State is documented in the following guidebooks: New York State Project Management Guidebook and the Management's Guide to Project Success. These reference books, targeted to two different audiences, document a common Project Management methodology for use across the state. While The Guidebook provides guidance and advice to Project Managers throughout the life of a project, the Management's Guide provides a high-level look at the Project Management Lifecycle, and provides Executive Management with a guide to understanding and supporting project management in their organization. Both of these may be viewed online or downloaded in their entirety from the Office for Technology's public website at http://www.cio.ny.gov/pmmp/guidebook2/index.htm (External Link) and http://www.cio.ny.gov/pmmp/guidebook2/managementguide/index.htm (External Link), respectively.

Another valuable resource is the Project Management Repository, hosted and administered by the CIO/OFT (Information Repository (External Link)). This repository provides members of the PM Community of Practice the ability to submit and search for PM artifacts. This repository is available at (http://www.cio.ny.gov/apps/nysfirm (External Link)). The PM Repository shares agency examples of project management templates and documents. We invite everyone to share samples of their works by simply e-mailing them to epmo@cio.ny.gov. These documents will then be posted to the website for others to use as examples.

Access to the repository is controlled by the CIO/OFT's Directory Services (NYSDS), and a userid/password is required. Many agencies already participate in NYSDS and staff in those agencies should contact their NYSDS Participating Organization Directory Services Administrator (PODSA) for an NYSDS account, which they can then request be given access to the repository. For more information, contact epmo@cio.ny.gov.

If you have project management resources which we can publicize via your own web link, or documents we can add to the information sharing website mentioned above, please let us know.
