Growing a PMO?

Then the PMO Roundtable is where you need to be!!

The PMO Roundtable was originally established by a handful of agencies as a grass roots effort to support each other in their Project Management implementation efforts. Since its initial inception, it has been formally established as a workgroup of the NYS PM Standing Committee. So whether you are in need of support for your PMO or want to share your knowledge and experience with others, joining the PMO Roundtable is an invaluable resource. Anyone interested in joining the PMO Roundtable may contact Jonathan Blake at Jonathan_A_Blake@Keane.com.

Don't Forget the Repository! Do you have something to share?

The Project Management Community of Practice's (PM COP) document repository has not had much new material added lately, but we continue to get new requests for access and new interest in reviewing real project information. PMs are particularly interested in seeing samples of completed project management templates. It is very easy to submit documents for posting: simply Email them to pmo@oft.state.ny.us and specify whether access should be made available to all members, or only to government employees. The PM COP includes both corporate members and contractors. NYS CIO/OFT hosts this website and their PMO will post all shared documents to the website. Examples of artifacts include successful deliverables, tools, templates, lessons learned and best practices. (Documents shared in this repository are provided by participating agencies to be used as examples only. They are not necessarily submitted as best practices and are for sample purposes only.)

Access to the website requires a NYSDS (New York State Directory Services) user account. If you do not have an account you may request one through your agency's Delegated Administrator (DA). If you do not know whom your agency's DA is, Email your request for an NYSDS account to pmo@oft.state.ny.us. Please include your Name, Agency/Organization, Phone Number, and Email address. If you are not a government employee, please clearly identify your role. If you have an account and you have forgotten your password, you must contact the Enterprise Help Desk at 1-800-697-1323.

December PMO Roundtable Meeting Recap

On a snowy day in December, a hearty group braved the weather to attend the PMO Roundtable meeting at Forum's 411 State Street offices on the topic of Project Triage. Drew Prescott, PMP®, from the New York State Enterprise Program Management Office at the Office of the Chief Information Officer/Office for Technology, provided an enlightening presentation on the topic. A panel discussion followed which also featured Donna O'Leary, PMP®, a NYSTEC consultant currently working at the Department of Environmental Conservation.

An active and engaging discussion of the topic by all roundtable members present proved to be enlightening to all. Special thanks to Drew and Donna for their contributions and congratulations to all who braved the weather to attend this valuable meeting. PMO Roundtable membership is limited to "NYS agencies that have demonstrated commitment to implementing Project Management by either establishing a formal Project Management Office, or undertaking an initiative under executive sponsorship to implement a project management methodology". We ask that agencies send only one or two representatives to each meeting. This allows the group to have an active exchange of idea around the table.

Fourth Annual Joint Event - Can you name the last three?

On January 16, 2008 the Forum PM Committee and the Upstate New York Chapter of Project Management Institute (PMI) hosted their fourth annual joint event. This year's speaker was J. Davidson Frame, PhD, PMP, Academic Dean at the University of Management and Technology (UMT) in Arlington, Virginia. Dr. Frame's topic was "Agile Project Management: Re-thinking PMBOK, CMM, ISO 9000 and Other Standards". Dr. Frame was chosen for this event following the very positive response he received in October at the first joint event the Forum PM Committee hosted with the New York City Chapter of PMI in October of 2007.

Approximately 175 people attended the presentation featuring a brief overview of the basic features of a number of agile and iterative development techniques and why so many companies and government agencies are moving away from Waterfall development methodologies. Dr. Frame also discussed the implications of these approaches for a number of international standards that affect how projects are carried out, specifically: PMBOK Guide, Capability Maturity Model, and ISO 9000.

For those who may be wondering, the first joint event featured Dr. Ginger Levin, a project management consultant and adjunct professor of project management at the University of Wisconsin - Platteville, speaking on the importance of the Project Management Office in 2004. In 2005 we heard from a PMI Board Member, Katherine J. Shawver, on "Project Management as a Strategic Partner." Last year, Frank Saladis, President of Project Imaginers, Inc. addressed the joint meeting with his presentation about "Your Future as a Project Manager." Stay tuned for what speaker next year's joint event may bring!

February 2008 PMI Chapter Meeting Recap

On the evening of Wednesday, February 20, more than 100 people attended the Upstate New York Project Management Institute's (www.pmi-uny.org) monthly meeting at the Italian-American Community Center to hear Dr. Melodie Mayberry-Stewart, New York State's Chief Information Officer and Director of the Office for Technology, (www.oft.state.ny.us) share her vision of "Achieving Success Through Project Management Excellence". Dr. Mayberry-Stewart spoke about her plans for going from good to great. She told the group why she believes that project management is critical to that success. Those reasons included creating a focus on what is most important to the organization, demonstrating the value of repeatable methods and tools to achieve desired benefits, documenting utilization of resources, and mitigating risks.

Dr. Mayberry-Stewart also spoke about her plans for expanding the Enterprise Program Management Office at the NYS CIO/OFT to align projects with the enterprise IT strategic plan, leverage IT investments through greater economies of scale, share best practices and expand knowledge management capability, and to increase CIO/OFT transparency and accountability. The enthusiasm with which Dr. Mayberry-Stewart speaks about the value of project management was inspirational to those in attendance.
