Webmasters' Guild Initiatives and Accomplishments

The Webmasters' Guild was created to provide a means for those individuals within state and local government that have responsibilities for their agencies Web Sites to share ideas, issues, problem solutions and to suggest and/or develop education opportunities to benefit web development professionals.
2006-2007 Accomplishments
- Collaborated with the NYS-PEF Professional Development Committee to develop and offer a follow-up, Phase II of the Successful Web Communications Training. The Program was jointly sponsored by PEF and GOER. There were approximately 650 registrations for approximately 13 different offerings in Albany and New York City
- Members of the Web Guild participated with members of the IT Accessibility Committee to develop Requirements for an RFP for a Validation Tool that provides verification and remediation suggestions to ensure compliance with NYS Technology Policy P04-002 and NYS Technology Standard S04-001; which mandate that NYS Web Pages be accessible to individuals with Disabilities.
- Web Guild Members participated in the development and subsequent evaluation of responses for the RFP noted above. (Note: A recommendation for a vendor is scheduled to be published in July 2007).
- Supported Governor Spitzer's Executive Order for Web Casting of all Open Meetings. Partnered with OFT and the IT Accessibility Committee to put together half-day session on "Webcasting Best Practices" that drew over 200 participants.
- Conducted 7 monthly meetings on topics relevant to the group that were attended by approximately 700 individuals, including two sessions that had attendance of approximately 200 each.
- Awarded the NYS Forum Best of the Web Awards recognizing both New York State and Local Government Web accomplishments at the Forum's Annual Meeting in September of 2006.
2007-2008 Projected Initiatives
- Assist in the development and implementation of the NYS-Specific Validation Tool.
- Conduct a minimum of 8 monthly sessions addressing topics of interest for NYS Web Professionals.
- Participate and facilitate a minimum of two additional training sessions to support NYS Web Professionals and the IT Community in general to facilitate successful web development for New York State Public Sector (2)
- Continue to offer a List Serv capability to foster communications among Public Sector Web Professionals.
- Continue to support programs such as the NYS Forum Best of the Web Awards that recognize and identify exemplary web development efforts.
- Continue to be responsive to the needs of the NYS Government's Web Development Professionals and to be opportunistic about offering relevant, focused training programs (1)
- Expose web professionals to emerging technology such as AJAX to improve agency sites (2)
- Continue offering education sessions on making new technologies accessible (9)
- Offer information on data base driven applications (3)
- Analyze portal technology as it relates to using the web for agency document and content management (4)
