About Gartner
  • Gartner Consulting projects rank among the highest quality in the industry, as demonstrated by our customer satisfaction metric.
  • This is due to our bringing together four powerful elements in each project we undertake:

Application Development Strategy and Architecture
    • Macromedia (formerly Allaire) ColdFusion offers an easy to learn development environment for “opportunistic” development projects and will continue to be targeted as an easy-to-use alternative to JSP.
    • ColdFusion remains quite popular worldwide, although its success has been hindered by its being based on proprietary technology.
    • Macromedia has recently announced the next-generation release of ColdFusion that runs on J2EE and supports integration with .NET. This is an important step, as the future of ColdFusion depends on the speed of Macromedia’s alignment with Java and .NET.
    • Gartner gives a " plus/minus" rating to ColdFusion.
    • Allaire claims that there will be backwards compatibility with CFML code to the new release.
    • We advise enterprises to use ColdFusion for opportunistic solution and revisit consideration of ColdFusion for systematic use if and when Macromedia successfully aligns ColdFusion with J2EE and .NET.

Application Development Strategy and Architecture
    • WebGain has significantly improved and expanded the Visual Cafe IDE, augmenting it with a strong end-to-end development life cycle tool suite.
    • WebGain is well-positioned to offer a single source for many Java development initiatives that require a more-comprehensive integrated suite than the IDE offered by Borland.
    • WebGain’s entire code base is being rewritten to gain better integration among tools
    • WebGain is a privately funded company with backing from BEA and Warburg Pincus. Its uncertain financial outlook is reflected in its slightly lower ability to execute position.
    • According to Gartner Research, WebGain may be acquired within 12-month time frame.

67
Java vs. .NET Conclusions
  • Small-to-medium-sized enterprises should focus on one platform as the strategic basis for e-business solutions.
  • Large enterprises must support both platforms. Consequently, they should focus on integration technologies.
  • Developers should focus on emerging Web services architectures on either platform.
  • Enterprises should expect staffing and skill shortages for both platforms.
