Acting NYS Chief Information Officer and Acting Director, NYS Office for Technology
Dan Chan is the Acting Chief Information Officer (CIO) for New York State (NYS) and Acting Director of the New York State Office for Technology. Dan (Chan) began his public service career in 2007, when he joined the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA) as their CIO. Under his stewardship, OTDA launched the award-wining innovative myBenefits.ny.gov citizen portal-the first mission-critical application in NYS built entirely with open source technology. Since its inception, myBenefits has served over half a million people with a success rate of over 90%.
Prior to coming to New York State government, Dan held various management positions at General Electric Company including Chief Technologist at GE Infrastructure where his team was responsible for the IT strategic planning of a $40B global business.
His primary responsibility as Acting CIO for New York State includes overseeing the transformation of the state's aging information technology ecosystem and enabling agencies in achieving their mission with a high degree of efficiency.
Dan earned a doctorate from the University of Southern California and a Master of Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, both in Aerospace Engineering. He has received significant recognition and numerous awards for his work both in the public and private sectors, including being named the New York State Public CIO of the Year in 2008 and one of Computerworld's Premier 100 IT Leaders in 2010.
