This session will demonstrate how NYS Open Data can be successfully leveraged to strategically promote and further an agency's mission, beyond simply satisfying public expectations of government transparency. Projects completed by the New York State Energy Research & Development Authority (NYSERDA) and the Center for Technology in Government, University at Albany (CTG) will be highlighted.

Open NY is Governor Cuomo's award-winning initiative of policies, programs and tools that provide public access to digital data for collaboration and analysis. Open NY empowers users with a powerful digital resource tool that provides centralized access to high-value government data that can be searched, explored, downloaded, and shared.

  • NYSERDA leverages the Open NY platform to publish high-value datasets to reduce time associated with fulfilling numerous reporting requests; increase consumer awareness; support research, forecasting, and modeling tools; spur innovation; and promote market transformation. NYSERDA's most popular dataset, solar electric projects, contains attributes for more than 80,000 residential, small commercial, and commercial / industrial solar electric projects. You will learn how NYSERDA's Data Governance team maximized the effectiveness of Open NY and made Open NY's catalog easier to navigate by leveraging Open NY to publish the underlying data that support visualizations such as charts, graphs, and maps hosted on the NYSERDA website. The result, an interactive solar electric dashboard hosted on NYSERDA's website, allows users to explore solar electric projects.
  • The CTG UAlbany project involved a partnership with the NYS Department of Health to improve agency workflow by bridging the gaps between the open data portals and the public website. The CTG and DOH team achieved this with open source, client-based code that is durable, flexible, portable, transferable, and understandable. Through the NYS DOH public website, New York State citizens now have access to new tools to help them make decisions about which health insurance plan is best for them and their families. The CTG team of researchers and developers produced new interactive visualizations using data on the quality of health insurance plans collected and made publicly available by NYS DOH. The CTG "Data Visualization-Ready" framework and DOH's open data are leveraged to help NYS meet its goal of supporting citizen health insurance choice making through more accessible and usable data visualizations.
