Effective Approaches for Mobile/Web Design, Development and Management

May 30th PresentersInnovative approaches to technology and service delivery are happening in New York State government and The NYS Forum's May 30 event assembled over 200 participants to learn about some exciting activities and recent trends and discuss their implications. Attendees heard from and questioned a  panel of speakers comprised of the NYS-ITS responsive web design "code-sprint" team and Dries Buytaert, founder of the Drupal content management system.

Kishor Bagul, NYS Chief Technology Officer, opened the event by highlighting the importance of innovation and new thinking around technology and uses of technology in New York State. He then turned the discussion over to Luke Charde, Craig Patik, and Eric Steinborn, three members of a cross-cluster NYS-ITS team who undertook an unconventional 3-week Responsive Web Design "coding sprint" to establish principles, patterns, and standards for mobile web design and development within NYS government. They detailed their experience which resulted in the Excelsior Web Framework available at http://github.com/nys-its/excelsior/wiki.

The session was capped off with a presentation on Open Source Development, Content Management Systems, and the current and future direction of the digital world by Dries Buytaert, whose Drupal web platform is used by 2% of the world's websites, including the White House and the New York State Senate. Dries highlighted several key trends such as personalized digital experiences and the importance of  community in  development efforts. All in all, it was an invigorating and  captivating exchange of ideas providing much food for thought and plans for action.
