Topic:

Design Systems: How to scale good Usability/Accessibility patterns

Guest Speakers:
  • Jesse Gardner, Director of User Research, ITS
  • Eric Steinborn, Design System Team Lead, ITS
This will be a walkthrough of the newly launched New York State Design System. We’ll highlight how the system helps teams build accessible, mobile-friendly digital services at scale, focusing on three key pillars: the code library, design library, and the reference site. We’ll share how we're addressing the DOJ’s accessibility deadline next April, the technical work behind digital inclusivity, and the tools we've built to support thousands of engineers across the state. Our presentation will include a brief overview of the accessibility work being done and a demo of the NYS Design System.

Jesse Gardner, Director of User Research, ITS
Jesse is the Director of User Research at New York State’s Office of Information Technology Services. He oversees both the state’s growing central Accessibility team and the NYS Design System team. He joined in 2023 after working in the tech industry for 20 years, doing platform systems development work. He started in design in the mid 90’s but shifted to engineering and enjoys close collaboration between the two disciplines.

Eric Steinborn, Design System Team Lead, ITS
Eric is the Lead on the New York State Design System project for the NYS Office of Information Technology Services. Eric has dedicated his career to improving access and the experience of all New Yorkers to digital technologies.
