Varun Sehgal serves as the Chief Information Officer at the Office of the New York State Attorney General (OAG), a role he has held since June 2022, overseeing the mission critical Information Technology Bureau in support of New York State’s top law enforcement and legal office. In this role, he is responsible for all aspects of the OAG’s technology infrastructure, cybersecurity, enterprise applications, client services and modernization portfolio.

Prior to joining the OAG, Varun served as the CIO and Assistant Vice President of IT at Hostos Community College of the City University of New York (CUNY) since 2006, where he led an award-winning team to the modernization of the campus through strategic investments, projects and collaborative efforts driven by the effective and efficient use of technology. In addition, he led cross-divisional and cross-campus collaborative digital transformation efforts to improve technology alignment and inclusion in strategic and operational planning, including the successful launch of an AI Chatbot, Peoplesoft ERP solution for the campus and a $25M CUNY Enterprise Content Management initiative. He oversaw the implementation of a multi-layered information security strategy resulting in a 70% reduction in cybersecurity incidents and improved overall awareness of safe computing practices.

Through a data-driven information architecture, he established a culture of collaboration, planning and innovation exploring the right mix of cloud vs. on-premises and unique vs. shared services approaches for customer-focused service delivery. Varun oversaw numerous University-wide initiatives on Disaster Recovery, IT Governance, Artificial Intelligence, Mobility, Accessible Computing, Information Security, Cloud Strategy and Data Analytics/Business intelligence.
At prior positions, he spearheaded initiatives at multi-billion dollar global firms, including at top tier Law firm Simpson Thacher & Bartlett (STB)and top 5 consulting firm Cap Gemini/Ernst & Young (CGEY), to help improve infrastructure reliability, cyber security posture, lower costs, and improve the overall performance of the IT organization – such as virtualization and data center consolidation, network security, wireless deployment, mobile computing and integrated directory services to name a few. At STB, he developed the business case and secured funding for a global infrastructure modernization strategy using MPLS to help improve bandwidth by 20x, resulting in over $350K in annual savings/productivity by enabling VoIP and high-speed connectivity. At CGEY, he designed and implemented the solution for secure connectivity for their first trans-Atlantic link thereby enabling a multi-million dollar offshore development practice.

Varun earned his dual-MBA from Baruch College in Computer Information Systems and Operations Management, and his undergraduate degree in Computer Science from NYU/Polytechnic University. He also holds management certificates from Harvard Graduate School of Education and Cornell University, as well as numerous IT industry certifications and FEMA Disaster Management certificates.
