The COVID-19 pandemic has created a tremendous amount of tragedy, uncertainty and change worldwide.  For NYC, changes caused by the pandemic have included major shifts in mobility patterns, with public transit experiencing a significant decline in ridership.  In order to assist with recovery planning, and contribute to future research, the NYC Department of City Planning’s Transportation Division (DCP-TD) has been publishing bi-weekly reports that monitor the pandemic’s effects on NYC's transportation network.

This presentation will focus on content from TD's recent COVID-19 Transportation Impacts Reports. These reports contain a combination of geospatial and non-geospatial data analyses with visualizations and summary observations. Within the context of these reports, the presentation will also discuss some of TD's data analytics workflows, including the use of traditional technologies, modern technologies, Big Data and OpenData.

Karen Johnson – Karen has over 20 years of experience working at TD in roles related to data analytics that have included: Team Leader for Intelligent Transportation Systems projects; Database Manager; and Data Analyst.  Prior to joining the Transportation Division, she was a Senior Project Manager in the Environmental Assessment and Review Division of DCP.  Karen holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics from Boston College, and a Joint Master’s Degree in Urban Planning and Historic Preservation from Columbia University.
